Carter took a ride on Ryan's dirt bike for the very first time yesterday. He just started driving 4 wheelers on his own recently and was doing so well with starting, stopping, steering, etc. Evan asked him if he'd like to ride Ryan's dirt bike. He said sure and jumped on (this surprised me because he tends to be the more cautious one). Anyway, he started out on Mom and Dad's lawn and steered around the trampoline, picked up speed, and panicked seeing the barbed wire fence ahead. He was going almost full speed when he ran directly into the fence. Evan and my Dad were outside with him, just steps away as he took off on the dirt bike. They both yelled for him to stop and Evan was there shortly after he hit, but he couldn't catch him. I can't imagine what that must have been like to see him heading towards the fence but unable to catch him. Thankfully Carter was wearing his helmet. It could have been much, much worse. He had several scratches on his chest, arms, and hand, and was pretty shaken up, but otherwise okay. I did not react calmly when he walked in and I heard he had gone into the fence. I was a wreck, which I later apologized for. It is pretty tough to stay calm when your child is screaming, bleeding, and wearing a shredded shirt. Afterwards, I kept saying prayers that he was okay and it was relatively minor, considering what might have happened. We are so thankful he is healing well and doing okay. I don't think he'll be on the dirtbike again anytime soon, but that's okay, because it fared worse than he did and Evan will have to do some repairs on it prior to riding it anyway!
This first picture isn't great quality, because it was taken from my phone, but it gives you an idea of what his scratches looked like:
Shredded shirt (across the top, the right side is the worst):
